Encompassing over a million acres, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area offers amazing opportunities for water and backcountry recreation. Stretching for hundreds of miles from Lees Ferry in Arizona up into southern Utah, Glen Canyon includes scenic vistas, gorgeous canyons to explore, and Lake Powell, one of the largest man-made reservoirs in North America (and a stand-up paddler or kayaker’s dream, since you can paddle right into narrow slot canyons!). Lake Powell was formed by the flooding of the Glen Canyon area thanks to Glen Canyon Dam, used for recreation, power generation, and delivering water to California, Arizona, and Nevada.

Glen Canyon is much more than Horseshoe Bend and Lake Powell, stunning though they may be. To escape the crowds, you’ll want to look a bit deeper, but go off the beaten path and you’ll be rewarded with towering canyon walls, wide-open vistas, stunning arches, and few other people on the trail.

WHAT TIME IS IT?

Depending on the time of year, this question is tougher than it seems! Straddling both Utah and Arizona, Glen Canyon follows Arizona time, which is Mountain Standard Time year-round—no daylight saving time here! However, within Arizona, the Navajo Nation does switch to daylight saving time. But within the Navajo Nation is the Hopi Reservation, which does not switch to daylight saving time. Utah does switch to daylight saving time, with the exception of Dangling Rope Marina, which is in Utah but runs on Arizona time and does not switch to daylight saving time. The roads continually cross these borders, and your phone might even be pinging a tower across a border from you, so your smartphone clock will constantly be changing. Pro tip from personal experience: set your car clock to the time zone you need to keep track of!
